I was an outsider—Black, South- and West- sides of Chicago. Often dismissed as "the hood". Cops, politicians, corporations, teachers, etc. rarely listened to us. So for me, survival meant listening to them.

I had to understand their conversations and how to become part of them. I had to understand their do's and dont's, wills and wont's, wants and needs. And it's that last one that got me into advertising.

If you can listen, you can sell. If you can write, you can sell a lot. So I started writing. Poetry. Rap. Songs. Stories... Then headlines. Then body copy... then taglines... and strategies... and brands... and scripts, events... Next thing you know I had a portfolio!

And then a job.

And then some big clients. And then some cool work. And then another job with more big clients. And some awards. And then some more jobs...
